About Trappist Beers

Trappist Beer: A Historic, Monastic, and Deeply Traditional Ale Style

Trappist Beer refers to a collection of beers brewed within Trappist monasteries under monastic supervision. These beers are produced according to strict criteria set by the International Trappist Association (ITA), and many carry the Authentic Trappist Product (ATP) label. Trappist beers span a variety of styles—Dubbel, Tripel, Quadrupel, and more—but all are known for their depth, craftsmanship, and purpose-driven production, with proceeds supporting the monastery and charitable causes.

At TheCru.ie, we offer a carefully curated selection of Trappist beers, including Belgian legends and international expressions of this revered tradition.

  • Mont des Cats – Although brewed at Chimay, it is sold by the French abbey but does not carry the ATP label.

Former Trappist Breweries (no longer active or ATP recognised)

  • Warming alcohol and smooth carbonation
  • A balance of sweetness, dryness, and earthy yeast character

  • Rich meats: duck, lamb, beef stew
  • Game and mushrooms: for earthy, rustic pairings
  • Strong cheeses: blue, gouda, Comté
  • Desserts: fig cake, chocolate truffles, fruit tart

FAQs

Are all Trappist beers Belgian?
No. While most are Belgian, Trappist breweries exist in the Netherlands, Italy, England, France, and Spain.

What’s the difference between Trappist and Abbey beer?
Trappist beer is brewed in a working monastery. Abbey beer may be inspired by monastic traditions but isn’t made by monks or on-site.

What’s the best glass and temperature?
Serve most between 10–14°C in a chalice or goblet to enhance aromas and mouthfeel.

Do you stock real Trappist beers?
Yes. We carry ATP-labelled beers and notable monastic styles from respected international producers.
