Producer Background
Schlenkerla, formally known as Brauerei Heller-Trum, is one of the most iconic breweries in Germany, particularly known for producing traditional Rauchbier, or smoked beer. Located in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg, the brewery’s legacy dates back to the 14th century, though the Heller family has been brewing under the Schlenkerla name since the late 1600s. The brewery remains family-owned and fiercely loyal to its traditional processes.
What makes Schlenkerla unique is its continued use of beechwood-smoked malt, crafted in-house using a historical malt kiln. This imparts a distinct smoky aroma and flavour to its beers—most notably the Schlenkerla Märzen and Urbock—that has become a defining characteristic of the brand. These beers are rich, layered, and unlike anything else in the world of beer. They are brewed in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot (German Beer Purity Law) and matured in centuries-old rock cellars beneath the brewery.
Despite their traditional methods, Schlenkerla beers appeal to modern craft drinkers who appreciate bold flavours and historical authenticity. You’ll find Schlenkerla listed alongside our selection of German Beer, offering a taste of old-world brewing in a contemporary craft beer context.
