Dublin Whiskey Distillery (D.W.D.) is a historic Irish whiskey brand with roots dating back to 1872, when John Brannick established the original distillery on Jones's Road, beside the River Tolka in Dublin. Today, the revived D.W.D. name celebrates the capital's remarkable whiskey-making heritage through its Dublin's Own Irish Whiskey range. Explore more Irish whiskey and spirits at TheCru.ie.
The History of Dublin Whiskey Distillery
During the nineteenth century, Dublin was one of the world's most important centres of whiskey production, with its distilleries renowned for their quality and craftsmanship. Dublin Whiskey Distillery became part of this thriving industry, producing whiskey at its Jones's Road site. In 1887, renowned whisky writer Alfred Barnard visited the distillery while researching his influential book, The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom. His account documented the facilities and whiskey production at D.W.D. during the golden age of Irish distilling. Like many historic Irish distilleries, D.W.D. was affected by the decline of the Irish whiskey industry during the twentieth century. The original distillery was eventually sold at auction on 17 October 1946. Exactly 71 years later, on 17 October 2017, the D.W.D. name was revived with the launch of its Heritage Edition Irish Whiskey.
Dublin's Own Irish Whiskey
The modern Dublin's Own range celebrates this historic Dublin distilling name through Irish whiskeys offering different cask influences and flavour profiles. The range includes Dublin's Own Bourbon Cask Irish Whiskey, known for its inviting honey, vanilla, caramel and gentle oak character. Dublin's Own XO Caribbean Rum Cask Irish Whiskey offers an alternative for whiskey enthusiasts interested in exploring the influence of rum casks. The Small Batch Heritage Edition commemorates the revival of D.W.D., connecting the modern brand with the history of the original Jones's Road distillery. Together, these expressions offer an opportunity to discover the variety of flavours associated with Irish whiskey and different cask maturation styles.
A Connection to Dublin's Whiskey Heritage
Dublin Whiskey Distillery's story reflects the wider history of Irish whiskey, from the international success of Dublin's distilleries during the nineteenth century to their decline and eventual revival. Although the modern Dublin's Own range is not produced at the original Jones's Road site, the brand preserves the name and heritage of one of the capital's historic distilleries. For Irish whiskey enthusiasts, D.W.D. offers more than a bottle of whiskey. It represents a connection to Dublin's distilling past and the continuing revival of interest in traditional Irish spirits.
