Paranoia Exotic Fruit Beer is a strong Belgian fruit beer from Brouwerij Huyghe, the brewery behind Delirium and a host of distinctive Belgian speciality beers. Brewed in Melle, Belgium, Paranoia combines a substantial 7% ABV with an exotic fruit character for a beer that is vibrant, aromatic and considerably stronger than many conventional fruit beers.

Expect a pronounced tropical and exotic fruit profile alongside the underlying sweetness, yeast character and warming strength of Belgian ale. The fruit brings freshness and an immediately approachable quality, while the higher ABV provides greater body and intensity. Rather than drinking like a light fruit beer, Paranoia has enough weight and character to reward slower sipping.

Its combination of Belgian brewing tradition and tropical fruit makes it an interesting choice for anyone looking beyond more familiar cherry and raspberry fruit beers. Serve it well chilled but not ice cold, allowing the fruit aromas and underlying beer character to become more expressive as it warms slightly in the glass.

About This Beer

Paranoia Exotic Fruit Beer is a 7% Belgian fruit beer produced by Brouwerij Huyghe in Melle, Belgium. Combining the expressive nature of Belgian speciality beer with exotic fruit character, it offers something quite different from both conventional strong Belgian ales and the lighter fruit beers commonly associated with the category.

Fruit beer has an important place within Belgium's remarkably diverse brewing culture, but the term covers a wide variety of beers. Some examples are based around traditional lambic and specific fruits, while others use different beer styles and brewing techniques to create an entirely different drinking experience.

Paranoia belongs firmly in the latter camp. This is not a traditional fruit lambic or Kriek. Instead, its appeal lies in bringing exotic fruit flavours into a stronger Belgian beer at 7% ABV.

That strength gives the beer considerably more presence than many lighter fruit beers. The tropical character provides the immediate aromatic appeal, while sweetness, fermentation character and warming alcohol give the beer additional depth.

The result is particularly suited to drinkers who like fruit-led beers but want something with greater intensity. It can also appeal to fans of Belgian speciality ales who are interested in exploring a more unusual, fruit-driven expression.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Bright and inviting in the glass, with a lively presentation suited to its exotic fruit character.

Aroma: Pronounced exotic and tropical fruit aromas lead, supported by sweet malt and the expressive fermentation character expected from a stronger Belgian beer.

Flavour: Fruit-driven from the outset, with tropical sweetness and freshness supported by the fuller character of the underlying beer. Belgian yeast notes and gentle warming alcohol add complexity as the flavour develops.

Mouthfeel: Rounded and relatively full-bodied, reflecting the 7% ABV, with carbonation helping provide freshness and prevent the fruit and sweetness from becoming overly heavy.

Finish: Fruity and warming, with lingering exotic fruit character accompanied by gentle sweetness and Belgian ale notes.

About Brouwerij Huyghe

Brouwerij Huyghe is a family brewery located in Melle, near Ghent in East Flanders, Belgium. Although brewing on the site has a much longer history, Léon Huyghe began working at the brewery in 1902 and acquired it several years later, laying the foundations for the modern brewery that carries his family name.

Today, Huyghe is known internationally above all for Delirium Tremens, its famous strong Belgian blonde ale identified by its distinctive pink elephant branding and ceramic-style bottle.

Delirium has developed into an extensive family of beers, but Huyghe's portfolio stretches considerably further. The brewery has produced numerous Belgian speciality beers covering different strengths, colours and flavour profiles, demonstrating the diversity that has long characterised Belgian brewing.

Paranoia Exotic Fruit Beer represents the brewery's more playful and unconventional side. Instead of concentrating exclusively on traditional Belgian styles, it combines the country's strong brewing character with exotic fruit flavours to produce something designed to stand apart.

Huyghe has also invested significantly in its brewery over the years, expanding production while continuing to brew in Melle. Its beers are now distributed internationally, making it one of the more recognisable Belgian breweries outside Belgium.

For customers exploring Belgian beer beyond the best-known Trappist and abbey-style names, Brouwerij Huyghe provides an interesting example of how contemporary Belgian breweries can combine tradition with more experimental flavours.

Belgian Fruit Beer

Belgium has an extraordinary tradition of brewing with fruit, but it is useful to distinguish between the different beers that can fall under the broad fruit-beer description.

Traditional Kriek, for example, has historical associations with cherries and lambic fermentation. Framboise traditionally introduces raspberries. These beers belong to a particular Belgian brewing tradition and should not be used as interchangeable descriptions for every Belgian beer containing fruit.

Paranoia Exotic Fruit Beer takes a different approach.

Its identity is built around exotic fruit flavour within a stronger Belgian beer rather than attempting to reproduce a traditional lambic style. At 7% ABV, it also has considerably more alcoholic weight than many fruit beers.

This makes it a useful option for drinkers who enjoy the accessibility and aromatic character of fruit beer but want something with a little more strength and substance.

For beers specifically belonging to the tart and lambic traditions, browse our Sour & Lambic range. For Paranoia and other Belgian speciality styles, our broader Belgian Beer collection is the more relevant place to explore.

Food Pairings

Paranoia's exotic fruit character gives it plenty of possibilities alongside food, particularly where sweet, spicy and savoury flavours meet.

Spicy Asian dishes are an excellent starting point. Thai curries, sweet chilli chicken and dishes incorporating ginger, lemongrass or coconut can complement the tropical character of the beer. Fruit sweetness can provide contrast against chilli, although very hot dishes may make the alcohol in a 7% beer feel more pronounced.

Caribbean-inspired food is another interesting option. Jerk chicken, grilled pork with tropical salsa or dishes featuring pineapple and mango can create natural connections with the beer's exotic fruit profile.

Cheese provides a simple alternative. Creamy cheeses can contrast with the fruit and carbonation, while stronger varieties have enough flavour to stand alongside the beer's 7% strength.

For dessert, tropical fruit is the obvious direction. Pineapple upside-down cake, mango cheesecake, passion fruit desserts or coconut-based dishes can all complement an exotic fruit beer. Vanilla ice cream alongside grilled or caramelised pineapple would provide a particularly straightforward pairing.

It can also be enjoyed on its own as an after-dinner beer. The combination of fruit and strength means Paranoia is better suited to slower drinking than its bright fruit character might initially suggest.

Why Choose Paranoia Exotic Fruit Beer?

Paranoia is a good choice when you want fruit beer but are looking for something beyond the familiar cherry, raspberry and sour-fruit styles.

Its 7% ABV gives it the structure and warming character of a stronger Belgian beer, while its exotic fruit profile keeps the drinking experience aromatic and approachable.

That combination also makes it an interesting introduction to Brouwerij Huyghe beyond the brewery's famous Delirium range. It demonstrates another side of Belgian brewing: playful, fruit-driven and willing to move outside established style boundaries.

If you enjoy exploring unusual international craft beer, browse our wider beer collection, or discover more Belgian Beer from traditional and contemporary Belgian breweries.

Whether you're already a fan of Belgian fruit beer or simply looking for something different from your usual IPA, lager or strong Belgian ale, Paranoia Exotic Fruit Beer combines tropical character with a substantial 7% strength for a distinctive drinking experience.
