Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky 70cl 45% is a distinctive Japanese whisky that challenges conventional whisky categories. Produced by Nikka Whisky using 100% malted barley, it is unusual because the spirit is distilled in traditional Coffey column stills rather than the pot stills normally associated with malt whisky.

The result is a rich, fruity and exceptionally characterful malt whisky. Expect inviting aromas of citrus, ripe pear and stone fruit alongside vanilla, caramel and gentle spice. The palate is rounded and silky, developing notes of banana, pear, citrus, vanilla and soft toffee before moving towards a warming, gently spiced finish.

Nikka’s historic Coffey stills are central to this whisky’s identity. Imported from Scotland to Japan in the 1960s, these traditional continuous stills are less efficient than many modern column stills but retain considerably more flavour and texture in the resulting spirit. Using malted barley rather than the grain normally associated with this type of distillation creates the unusual combination found in Coffey Malt.

Despite being made entirely from malted barley, Nikka Coffey Malt is not classified as Japanese single malt whisky because of its column-still production method. It is instead a fascinating alternative for whisky drinkers interested in exploring how distillation can influence flavour.

Enjoy neat, with a small amount of water or over a large cube of ice.

About This Whisky

Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky is one of the more unusual Japanese whiskies, combining a raw material traditionally associated with single malt whisky with a method of distillation more commonly used to make grain whisky.

It is produced entirely from malted barley, but instead of being distilled in traditional pot stills, the spirit is made using Nikka’s historic Coffey continuous stills.

That distinction is fundamental to understanding the whisky.

A Coffey still – also known as a continuous or column still – was developed during the nineteenth century by Aeneas Coffey. Compared with traditional batch-operated pot stills, it allows distillation to take place continuously. Modern versions can produce very light, highly purified spirits, but older traditional Coffey stills behave somewhat differently.

Nikka values its Coffey stills precisely because they retain greater flavour and texture than more efficient modern continuous distillation systems.

Using 100% malted barley through these stills creates something particularly unusual. Coffey Malt combines the richness associated with malt whisky with the distinctive fruity, creamy character created by Nikka’s continuous distillation.

At 45% ABV, it retains plenty of body and aromatic intensity while remaining approachable enough to drink neat.

For anyone exploring Japanese whisky beyond familiar blends and single malts, Nikka Coffey Malt provides an excellent demonstration of how the still itself can dramatically influence the finished spirit.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Bright golden amber with an attractive clarity and warm tone.

Aroma: Rich and expressive, opening with ripe fruit and citrus. Pear, banana and stone-fruit notes develop alongside vanilla, caramel and gentle cereal sweetness, with subtle spice adding further complexity.

Flavour: Smooth and fruit-driven with ripe pear, banana and citrus complemented by vanilla, soft caramel and malt sweetness. Gentle spice develops as the whisky opens, adding contrast to the richer fruit and confectionery notes.

Mouthfeel: Rounded, silky and relatively full-bodied, with the traditional Coffey still contributing a pleasing texture that distinguishes the whisky from lighter modern column-distilled spirits.

Finish: Warming and lingering, with malt sweetness, vanilla, fruit and gentle spice gradually fading from the palate.

Why Is Nikka Coffey Malt Different?

The name “Coffey Malt” can initially cause some confusion.

It does not mean that the whisky contains coffee, nor is coffee used as a flavouring ingredient. “Coffey” refers to the type of continuous still used to distil the spirit, named after its inventor, Aeneas Coffey.

What makes this particular Nikka whisky especially interesting is the choice of grain.

Continuous stills are strongly associated with grain whisky, where cereals such as corn are commonly used alongside a smaller proportion of malted barley. Malt whisky, by contrast, is normally associated with 100% malted barley distilled in copper pot stills.

Nikka Coffey Malt crosses those conventional boundaries.

It uses malted barley but distils it through Coffey stills. This gives the spirit a profile quite different from a traditional pot-distilled single malt while retaining the richness and flavour contribution of malted barley.

This also explains why the bottle should not simply be described as a Japanese single malt.

The distinction may appear technical, but it has a genuine impact on flavour. Nikka's traditional Coffey stills create a spirit with substantial texture and pronounced fruit character, contributing to the creamy, rich personality for which Coffey Malt is known.

Nikka's Coffey Stills

Nikka's traditional Coffey stills form an important part of the company's whisky-making history.

Founder Masataka Taketsuru valued the style of spirit produced by these traditional continuous stills and imported a Coffey still from Scotland to Japan in 1963. A second was subsequently added.

The stills were initially installed at Nikka's Nishinomiya plant before being moved to the Miyagikyo Distillery in 1999, where they continue to play an important role in production.

Compared with highly efficient modern continuous stills, traditional Coffey stills are more difficult and expensive to operate. Efficiency, however, is not Nikka's primary reason for retaining them.

Their advantage lies in flavour.

The older design allows more character from the raw ingredients to remain in the distillate, producing spirits with greater body, sweetness and texture. This makes them particularly valuable for the creation of Nikka's grain whisky and the unusually constructed Coffey Malt.

About Nikka Whisky

Nikka Whisky was founded by Masataka Taketsuru, one of the most important figures in the development of Japanese whisky.

Taketsuru travelled to Scotland in 1918 to study whisky production, learning both academically and through practical experience at Scottish distilleries. He returned to Japan with knowledge of traditional Scotch whisky production and a determination to establish authentic whisky making in his home country.

In 1934, he established his own company and built a distillery at Yoichi on the northern island of Hokkaido. Taketsuru chose the location because he believed its climate and environment offered conditions reminiscent of Scotland.

Yoichi remains one of Nikka's two principal malt whisky distilleries.

The second, Miyagikyo Distillery, was established in 1969 in Miyagi Prefecture. Its different climate, water source and production equipment allow Nikka to create a contrasting range of spirits, providing greater flexibility when constructing its whiskies.

Today, Nikka produces internationally recognised Japanese whiskies including expressions from Yoichi and Miyagikyo alongside From the Barrel, Coffey Grain and Coffey Malt.

Nikka Coffey Malt represents another side of the producer's expertise: rather than focusing solely on pot-distilled malt whisky, it demonstrates the important role continuous distillation plays within Nikka's wider whisky-making philosophy.

How to Enjoy Nikka Coffey Malt

Nikka Coffey Malt is versatile enough to explore in several ways.

For your first tasting, try it neat at room temperature. A tulip-shaped whisky glass will concentrate the aromas and provide the best opportunity to explore its fruit, malt, vanilla and spice.

After tasting it neat, add a few drops of still water. The slight reduction in alcohol can reveal additional fruit and sweetness, particularly some of the softer pear, banana and vanilla characteristics.

Serving it over a large cube of ice is another excellent option. Gradual dilution softens the whisky while retaining its creamy texture and rich flavour.

Japanese whisky also has a strong association with the highball, and Coffey Malt can make a particularly flavourful version. Serve a measured amount of whisky over good-quality ice and top carefully with chilled soda water. The carbonation can emphasise the whisky's fruit and aromatic qualities while creating a considerably lighter, more refreshing serve.

Food Pairings

The fruity, creamy and gently spiced profile of Nikka Coffey Malt gives it plenty of possibilities alongside food.

Japanese dishes provide a natural starting point. Try it with yakitori, particularly lightly glazed chicken, where caramelisation from the grill can complement the whisky's vanilla and sweet malt character.

It can also work with pork dishes, grilled meats and richer seafood. The whisky has sufficient body to remain noticeable alongside savoury flavours without the heavy smoke that could overwhelm more delicate foods.

Cheese offers another direction. Mature Gouda, Comté or a good mature Cheddar can complement the whisky's sweetness and texture, particularly where the cheese has nutty or caramelised characteristics.

For dessert, look towards flavours already suggested by the whisky itself. Vanilla panna cotta, crème brûlée, caramelised banana or an apple and pear tart can all create interesting combinations.

Dark or milk chocolate can also work, although intensely bitter chocolate may obscure some of Coffey Malt's softer fruit character.

Why Choose Nikka Coffey Malt?

Nikka Coffey Malt is particularly worthwhile for whisky drinkers interested in discovering something genuinely different rather than simply moving between different cask finishes or age statements.

Its defining feature is fundamental to the spirit itself: 100% malted barley distilled through traditional Coffey continuous stills.

That unusual production method produces a Japanese malt whisky with rich fruit, sweetness and a creamy texture while demonstrating a distinctly different expression of malted barley from conventional pot-distilled single malt.

It also offers an interesting comparison with Nikka Coffey Grain. Tasting the two alongside one another provides an opportunity to explore how different raw materials behave when distilled through Nikka's historic continuous stills.

Whether you're already interested in Japanese whisky, discovering Nikka for the first time or looking for a distinctive bottle for a whisky collection, Coffey Malt combines fascinating production history with an approachable and rewarding flavour profile.
