The history of Kölsch dates back to 1986 when the brewers of Köln came together to establish the Kölsch Konvention. This agreement outlined the specific brewing process that had to be followed and restricted the use of the term 'kölsch' to breweries located within 50 km of Köln. In 1997, Kölsch was granted a protected geographical indication (PGI) status, extending this protection across the entire European Union. Today, thirteen esteemed breweries in and around Cologne proudly adhere to this convention, with Fruh Kolsch being a standout example.
