Producer Background
Rothaus Brewery, officially the Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus, is a state-owned brewery located in the heart of Germany’s Black Forest. Founded in 1791 by the Prince-Abbot of St. Blasien, it has long stood as a symbol of heritage and quality in the Baden-Württemberg region. Despite its age, Rothaus remains an icon of traditional brewing done right, with a particular focus on clean, well-lagered beers that showcase the best of German craftsmanship.
One of Rothaus’s defining characteristics is its dedication to purity—every beer is brewed according to the German Reinheitsgebot (Purity Law), using only malt, hops, yeast, and water. Their most iconic beer, the Rothaus Tannenzäpfle Pils, has earned a loyal following for its distinctive hop profile, refined bitterness, and consistent drinkability. Rothaus also produces excellent wheat beers and Märzen-style lagers, all recognised for their high standards and refreshing qualities.
Though Rothaus is not considered a craft brewery in the modern artisanal sense, its commitment to quality, local sourcing, and long maturation times align with the values at the core of true craft beer. That’s why you’ll find Rothaus on our shelves—offering a different, but no less authentic, take on what it means to brew well. It's a natural complement to our broader range, including Belgian Beer and Irish Craft Beer.
