About This Beer
Duchesse De Bourgogne Duchesse Cherry 33cl 6.8% is a traditional Belgian cherry sour beer produced by Brouwerij Verhaeghe-Vichte in West Flanders. Combining genuine Belgian sour cherries with a mixed-fermentation, oak-aged Flanders Red Ale, it offers a distinctive combination of vibrant fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and the complexity of traditional Flemish brewing.
Although cherry beers are often associated with Belgian Kriek, Duchesse Cherry has a very different foundation. Rather than using lambic as its base, the brewery begins with a top-fermented Flemish red-brown ale, which then undergoes further maturation and wild fermentation in oak casks.
These large wooden vessels, known as foeders, play an important role in developing the beer's character. The oak contributes tannins and subtle woody complexity, while the extended maturation process allows the beer's sweet-and-sour profile to develop gradually.
Once the base beer is ready, the brewery introduces genuine Belgian Gorsem sour cherries, grown in the Sint-Truiden region of Limburg.
The quantity of fruit is particularly significant: 20kg of cherries are added for every 100 litres of beer, equivalent to 200g per litre.
The cherries remain in contact with the beer for six months, allowing their natural flavours and acidity to become part of the finished beer.
Unlike many fruit-flavoured drinks, Duchesse Cherry is produced without cherry extracts or flavour enhancers. Its cherry character comes from the actual fruit used during production.
According to the brewery, the complete process takes approximately 24 months before the beer is ready for filtering and packaging.
This extended approach gives Duchesse Cherry a particularly distinctive character. The fruit contributes fresh sour cherry flavours, while the underlying Flanders Red Ale provides malt depth, refreshing acidity and the subtle influence of oak.
The result is a ruby-red Belgian fruit beer that balances sweetness and sourness without losing the character of its traditional brewing base.
At 6.8% ABV, Duchesse Cherry is a satisfying choice for drinkers who enjoy complex fruit beers, traditional Belgian sour ales and oak-aged beers.
It is also an interesting alternative for those who enjoy cherry wines or other fruit-forward drinks with a refreshing acidic character.

About the Brewery
Brouwerij Verhaeghe-Vichte is a historic family brewery located in Vichte, West Flanders, Belgium.
Founded in 1885 by Paul Verhaeghe, the brewery has become particularly well known for its traditional Flemish red-brown ales and its use of oak maturation.
West Flanders has a distinctive brewing heritage, especially when it comes to beers that combine mixed fermentation, fruit-like acidity and ageing in wooden vessels.
Unlike conventional ales that are generally produced through a relatively straightforward fermentation process, traditional Flanders Red Ales develop additional complexity through extended maturation and the activity of different microorganisms.
Oak casks have historically played an important role in this process, contributing both maturation character and an environment in which the beer's distinctive acidity can develop.
Brouwerij Verhaeghe-Vichte is best known internationally for Duchesse de Bourgogne, its classic 6.2% Flanders Red Ale.
Named after Mary of Burgundy, the original Duchesse de Bourgogne is renowned for its ruby-red appearance, sweet-and-sour balance and wine-like character.
Duchesse Cherry builds on this established brewing tradition by introducing genuine Belgian sour cherries to the brewery's oak-aged red ale.
The choice of cherries is particularly important.
The brewery uses Gorsem sour cherries from the Sint-Truiden region in Limburg, an area associated with Belgian fruit growing.
By allowing the cherries to macerate in the beer for six months, the brewery creates a fruit character that is integrated into the beer rather than simply added as a flavouring at the end of production.
The brewery's use of real cherries, mixed fermentation and oak foeders gives Duchesse Cherry a distinctive identity within the Belgian fruit beer category.

Food Pairings
Duchesse Cherry is a particularly versatile beer for food pairing because its combination of cherry sweetness and refreshing acidity works with both savoury dishes and desserts.
Duck breast is one of the most natural matches, particularly when served with a cherry reduction or a rich red wine sauce. The fruit character complements the meat, while the beer's acidity helps balance its richness.
Roast pork is another excellent pairing, especially when accompanied by apple sauce, braised red cabbage or a fruit-based glaze.
The beer's sweet-and-sour profile complements the natural sweetness of pork while providing a refreshing contrast to the savoury flavours.
For cheese, try creamy goat's cheese, mature Gouda or aged cheddar.
Goat's cheese works particularly well because its tanginess complements the acidity of the beer, while the cherries provide a fruity contrast.
Blue cheese offers a more adventurous pairing, with the beer's sweetness balancing the cheese's saltiness and intensity.
Duchesse Cherry is also an excellent partner for desserts.
Dark chocolate is a particularly appealing choice, as its cocoa bitterness contrasts with the beer's cherry sweetness.
Black Forest gâteau is another natural pairing, bringing together cherries, chocolate and cream in a combination that echoes the beer's fruit character.
A cherry tart, berry cheesecake or almond-based dessert can also work beautifully.
For a lighter option, try Duchesse Cherry alongside a fruit and cheese platter featuring fresh cherries, berries and soft cheeses.
Serve at approximately 8–12°C in a tulip glass or wine glass to allow its fruit aromas and oak-aged complexity to develop.
