In 1981 De Halve Maan produced a one-off ‘straf’ - a strong beer - to celebrate the inauguration of the statue of St. Arnold, the Patron Saint of Brewers. This beer is the offspring of that celebration brew. Its name, Straffe Hendrik, refers to the taste, which is definitely ‘straf’, but also pays homage to the generations of Henri’s – Hendrik in Dutch – in the Maes family who ran the brewery.
Straffe Hendrik, which is a ‘living’ beer with a taste that develops through re-fermentation in the bottle, has inherited the tradition of the authentic Bruges tripel. It is a blonde tripel with a powerful taste enhanced by rich touches of malt, caramel and hops.
