About Abbaye Du Mont Des Cats

Abbaye du Mont des Cats is a historic Trappist monastery brewery located in northern France, producing a revered style of beer with deep ties to Belgian monastic brewing traditions. Now available for craft beer online and collection from our Dublin shop, this unique beer offers Irish customers a chance to taste one of the most contemplative expressions in the world of craft beer. With smooth malt character, subtle complexity, and spiritual depth, it’s ideal for fans of craft beer Ireland, and those exploring beyond modern hop-forward styles. Whether you’re browsing Belgian Beer or expanding your craft beer Dublin selection, this is a truly distinctive addition.

Producer Background
Located on the French-Belgian border in the Flanders region, Abbaye du Mont des Cats was founded in 1826 by Trappist monks returning from exile. Brewing has been part of monastic life at the abbey since the 19th century, though today the beer is brewed in collaboration with Chimay — one of the world’s most respected Trappist breweries — using Mont des Cats’ original recipe and water source. The result is an ale that blends Belgian-style complexity with French monastic character.

The beer itself is a robust, amber-hued ale with fruity esters, a gentle bitterness, and a warming finish — brewed for reflection rather than refreshment. Though not officially recognised as a Trappist beer due to being brewed outside the monastery walls, it upholds the spiritual and artisanal values of monastic brewing. On TheCru.ie, Abbaye du Mont des Cats sits comfortably among our finest Belgian Beer, alongside traditional German Beer and the ever-growing world of craft beer Ireland.
